The Entertainment Community Fund named their New York City board room after the late theater owner and producer James M. Nederlander in recognition of his contributions. The James M. Nederlander Board Room was inaugurated on February 22 during the Fund’s first 2023 meeting.
Nedlander, who died in 2016, was a longtime head of the company and assumed the post in 1967 after his father died. After expanding the family business from Detroit to New York in the mid-1960s, the Dutch began buying Broadway theaters and producing shows. He has served as a producer on dozens of original Broadway plays and musicals, including Nine, Cage of Fools, Noise Off, Fences and Follies of Will Rogers.
He was inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame in 1992 (which he co-founded in 1970). Among his many honors, Nedlander received a Tony Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004 and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The National High School Musical Award known as “Jimmys” is also named after him.
“James M. Nederlander has demonstrated time and time again his commitment to serving our performing arts community. We are reminded of his generosity every time the Foundation’s Board of Directors meets in the Board Room,” Fund President and CEO Joe Benincasa said in a statement said in a statement.
Formerly known as the Actors Fund, the fund has been supporting artistic life by providing stability to entertainment professionals since 1882. The fund continues to help make life in the arts more sustainable by offering programs that include emergency financial assistance, workshops, support groups, mental health resources, and more.
