Entertainment in January and February

It’s winter, but that doesn’t mean the fun stops. If you’re feeling brave enough to get outside, there’s plenty to do – concerts, music festivals, plays, art exhibits, poetry readings, even a rodeo!

Despite the cold air, the event schedule for the early months of 2023 is full of options.

Pop Music: Columbus Concert Lineup

January concert selections include “I Love the 90s”, an R&B evening with trio SWV (Sisters with a Voice) Tony! Tony! Tone! Dave Hollister, celebrating music with Columbus country rocker McGuffey Lane, Winter Jam ’23, a praise concert featuring Christian artist We the Kingdom, Jeremy Camp and more.

Next month will bring bluegrass, Americana, country and electronic hip-hop, and R&B and hip-hop artist SZAhe will perform at the Schottenstein Center on February 21st.

With more concerts coming up, artists from different genres, there is something for almost everyone!

Later in 2023:Def Leppard and Motley Crue to bring ‘world tour’ to Ohio Stadium on Aug. 8

Visual arts, exhibitions, author interviews and poetry readings

Women artists will feature prominently in the early months of visual arts in Columbus, with work by women showcased at the Wexner Center for the Arts and the Columbus Museum of Art.In one of the exhibits, “Mirror Shapes,” the Filipino-American artist gina ostello Identity and belonging are examined using photography, film, performance and drawing.

On the literary front, a well-known young author, a Nobel Peace Prize winner and a poet laureate are just a few of the authors who will be making local appearances.Other events include a full lineup of Gramercy books, featuring local authors Hanif Abdulajib with Dion Castle Edwards Discuss the famous author Toni Morrison and the influence on their work.

Additional exhibits, plus author interviews and poetry readings, are scheduled for January and February, so stay tuned!

The first few months of winter will feature several productions, including an encore performance of Shadowbox Live’s original dance theater production,”Point of No Return: Bonnie and Clyde’s Deadly Dance.

In addition, there will be a number of first performances: the world premiere of “The Price of Power” at the Abbey Theater in Dublin, a political drama directed by former Ohio Supreme Court justice Herb Brown; Belgian ensemble Ontroerend Goed’s “Are we not drawn onward to new erA” and the regional premiere of Jeremy O. Harris’ controversial Tony-nominated Broadway production “The Slave Game.”

MadLab Theater will also host the world premiere of Columbus playwright Julie Whitney Scott’s “Snowville Cafe,” and Gallery Players will host Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Lynn Notta The Premiere of Lynn Nottage’s play “Underwear” in Greater Columbus.

For young theater lovers, Columbus Children’s Theater will present the regional premiere of “SpongeBob SquarePants The Musical,” featuring songs by artists such as David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper and John Legend.

comedy

In homegrown humor, the producers of It’s All Been Done Presents, a monthly modern show in the style of an old-school radio series, will air a new version in mid-January, followed by another in February.

Big names are also coming to Columbus, with late night joker Jay Leno on Feb. 3 as part of McCoy Center for the Arts’ “Live @ the McCoy” annual benefit gala, along with comedian, actor and “Saturday Night Live” show alum adam sandler Comes to National Arena on February 7th.

Another “SNL” graduate, Jay Pharaoh, will be one of several comedians coming to Columbus Funny Bone in January and February. Other stand-up performances are scheduled at the Nest Theater (Gary Meikle) and the Palace Theater (Fortune Feimster).

These are just a few options to get you out of the woods; there’s plenty of comedy in store for stand-up lovers!

Classical/Jazz/Dance

Musicians are tuning their instruments, dancers are exercising and singers are doing their vocal exercises in preparation for upcoming classical and jazz concerts as well as original ballets.

In addition to the Winter Music Festival, the Columbus Symphony will pay tribute to the late, great Aretha Franklin, while the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra will present a “Neighborhood Series” of concerts at various smaller venues in Greater Columbus.

Opera Project Columbus will once again turn its attention to the work of black composers, while Early Music Columbus will present music that reflects Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

New York jazz pianist Micah Thomas, a Columbus native and former member of the Columbus Youth Jazz Orchestra, will perform with his quartet and return to the Ohio Theater, where “dorothy and the wizard of ozpremiered in 2018, BalletMet will repeat Art DirectorEdward LiangOriginal ballet.

If pop music isn’t your thing, you might enjoy the mellow voice of acoustic pianist George Winston. Or maybe your listening taste leans more toward podcasts—namely, the strange events of “Welcome to Night Vale.” There are also family-oriented options like the four-day “Disney on Ice,” featuring 50 characters from Buzz Lightyear to Mickey and Minnie Mouse, and the world’s toughest rodeo, where in addition to the arena activities, you Pony rides, cowboy meetings and behind-the-scenes tours are available.

All of these events add up to an exciting January and February in and around Columbus, where the fun doesn’t stop!
