The close match started with the Deccan gladiators winning the throw and opting to bat. They lost their opener, Tom Kohler-Cadmore, to Akeal Hosein’s third off the first ball, caught by Izharulhaq Naveed in the diminutive third. Jason Roy hit the last ball of the first out of bounds through a screen.

The second was more intense as Matiullah Khan took the second off a consistent Nicholas Pooran wicket. Pooran flicks into Mohammad Waseem’s hand7. The wickets continued to drop when Hosein had Jason Roy caught by wicketkeeper Azam Khan for five.

The New York Strikers topped the list, knocking out three top hitters in just 2.3 turnovers. Leading the team to good results fell to India’s experienced all-rounders Suresh Raina and David Wiese, who have been solid in the franchise leagues. Weiss escaped being trailed by Matiullah Khan in the fourth inning as Azam failed to gain an inside advantage.

In the fifth, Weiss hit Thompson twice in a row. But he hit the third over from Thomspon to Muhammad Waseem at midwicket. Thompson also picked up Andre Russell’s wicket, just as he had been sent off before. Mohammad Waseem caught the ball for the third time in the innings, this time again at the center post.

With half the team back in the dugout at the halftime mark and just 42 points on the plate, the New York forward wanted the kill. But Muhammad Waseem gave up 12 runs in the sixth inning. Wahab Riaz came out in the seventh to tighten the game, but Odean Smith hit him for 6 and hit the line at the end of the 20 run.

Thompson pitched in the eighth and didn’t go on to give up anything until the fourth pitch was pulled to six by Smith. Raina also dropped him by six on the last ball. The prospect of scoring over 100 became clear when 17 points were over.

Wahab Riaz struggled to control the run in his second over. He had Reina out on the fifth delivery, although Smith pulled him to the boundary. Paul Sterling took the lead from Reina and sprinted back. Raina’s 28 points had two boundaries and a 6.

The score went over 100 when Smith hit Izharulhaq Naveed in the first ball of the final over for a six or long run. On the last ball of the innings, Naveed allowed Odean Smith to be caught by Fletcher for 38 balls at long range. He knocked down 19 balls with 3 boundaries and 3 sixes. The Deccan Gladiators’ disastrous performance of 37 for 5 in 4.4 overs ended the 10th over with 7 for 109 for 109.

The New York forward’s chase began on a blockbuster note. Opener Andre Fletcher hit a six in the first innings of Josh Little. He threw out of bounds for the third time and another six for the fifth. But he was also sent off on the final ball of that game, caught by Russell for 16 at halftime.

Tom Helm scored just three runs in the second innings, but opener Sterling used the third to hit two consecutive sixes by Zahur Khan, both of which hit midwicket. Odean Smith, who also hit the fourth, was hit by Stirling for six and scored on his first two overs.

With the third ball, Smith ended Sterling’s knock, allowing him to be caught by Wes deep in the middle. Zahoor Khan scored an excellent second after conceding just eight. The New York forward is now pinning its hopes on Eoin Morgan and Azam Khan.

Azam Khan hit Andre Russell twice in the first two balls at the start of the sixth and ended with 12 runs. Helm was reintroduced to tighten up the running process. Azam hit the second ball through the screen. Morgan also picked two boundaries in the fifth and sixth deliveries.

The New York forward needs 31 points in his final three games. Andre Russell came out in the eighth. Russell gave up just six runs, though Morgan opted for the boundary on his third pitch. Morgan beat Alden Smith from long range with a six and a boundary to bring his side closer to goal. Azam also hit Smith’s boundary for 19 overs.

In the end, the New York forwards needed six points in the final round. Josh Little threw a single on the final pitch. Morgan scored two runs in the third and one in the fourth. Azam failed to score anything in the fifth innings but won the match by hitting Little in the mid-wicket single in the final over and winning the game by eight wickets.

Brief score: Deccan Gladiators lose to New York 110/2 in 10 games (Odean Smith 38, Suresh Raina 28; Akeal Hosein 2-9, Jordan Thompson 2-34) Forwards (Eoin Morgan 42 not out, Azam Khan 26 not out; Joshua Little 1-22) 8 wickets
