According to CNNEthan Crumbley, 15, who is accused of killing four people at a Michigan high school in November 2021, will use an insanity defense.
Crumbley’s defense attorney filed a motion last week and stated they plan to “assert the defense of insanity at the time of the alleged offense.”
Crumbley is expected to be evaluated by a doctor from the Center for Forensic Psychiatry, according to Oakland County Chief Assistant Prosecutor David Williams.
As reported, Crumbley is officially charged with a total of 24 charges: 12 counts of possession of a firearm in commission of a crime, four counts of first-degree murder, seven counts of assault with intent to murder, and one count of terrorism.
Ethan Crumbley is accused of killing four students and injuring eight other people, including a teacher, on Tuesday morning. The accused walked the halls of the school with a semi-automatic handgun purchased by his father on Black Friday.
According to the Associated PressEthan’s parents Jennifer and James Crumbley have also been charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter. Oakland County prosecutor Karen McDonald said that the parents’ actions in the incident went “far beyond negligence.”
She continued to say, “The parents were the only individuals in the position to know the access to weapons. The gun seems to have been just freely available to that individual.” Ethan, who is being charged as an adult, is facing at least 24 charges following the incident, including murder, attempted murder, and terrorism. Following the shooting, officials confirmed that Ethan’s dad purchased the gun that was used in the shooting just four days before the incident. It’s also reported that Ethan’s parents met with school officials just hours before the incident took place.
Shortly after this announcement, the parents failed to appear in court for an arraignment and were on the run. Jennifer and James Crumbley were eventually captured in Detroit. They were arraigned and pleaded not guilty.
