Ethiopian officials and Tigray rebels agreed on Saturday to provide immediate and unhindered humanitarian assistance to “all those in need” in Tigray and adjacent areas. The two sides also agreed a few days ago to “cease hostilities”, marking the end of the two-year war.
This week, the two parties held peace talks again in the Kenyan capital Nairobi to discuss the full implementation of the agreement signed 10 days ago. In line with this, a joint statement released Saturday said “the parties have agreed to provide unhindered humanitarian assistance to all those in need in Tigray and adjacent areas.”
The agreement was signed by Ethiopian Armed Forces Chief of Staff Berhanu Jura and Tigray Rebel Commander-in-Chief General Tades Wared.

The African Union mediator also said Saturday’s agreement would “enter into force immediately”. In addition, they decided to set up a joint committee tasked with disarming the fighters with the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).
“We have suffered unspeakable pain over the past two years and continue to suffer,” said Tades, who hopes the suffering will end soon after making the pledge. Meanwhile, Berhanu pledged that the Ethiopian government would “go all out” to bring peace and stability to its people and country.
