December 13 (United Press International) — The European Parliament terminated Greek Vice President Eva Kelly a day after she was arrested in a bribery scheme linked to Qatar.

“The vote was taken in accordance with rule 21 of the parliamentary rules of procedure following an ongoing investigation in Belgium against some members and staff of the European Parliament,” a statement from parliament said.
It said the process was triggered by a decision by the Presidential Council earlier Tuesday that unanimously approved the operation.
“The Council of Presidents is appalled and deeply concerned by recent revelations of corruption and crime affecting the European Parliament’s decision-making process,” the body said in a separate statement.
“All those involved must be held accountable. Parliament will continue to fully support the work of the police and the judiciary to ensure that justice is done. There will be no business as usual. The European Parliament will initiate an internal reform process to ensure greater transparency and accountability, become invulnerable.”

Carey is a member of the Greek Social Democratic Party of Greece. She was detained along with former Italian parliamentary representative Antonio Panzeri. The names of the other two arrested have not been released.
