December 4 (United Press International) — Mount Semeru in East Java, Indonesia, erupted, spewing ash as high as about 50,000 feet.

Indonesian Center for Volcanology and Geohazard Mitigation said in a statement On Sunday, it noted that the country’s alert level for volcanic activity had been raised from Level III to the highest level, IV.

Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency evacuated at least 1,979 people from near the volcano on Sunday said in a statement. Officials said there were no reports of casualties.

“A total of 10,000 cloth masks, 10,000 medical masks and 4,000 children’s masks were distributed to reduce the respiratory health risk from the ash,” the agency said in a statement.

The Japan Meteorological Agency also monitors volcanic activity in Indonesia, said in a statement The massive eruption was recorded around 11.18am on Sunday.

“We are currently investigating whether Japan will have a tsunami from this eruption,” the Japanese official said.

“Currently, no significant tidal changes have been observed at observation points in Japan or overseas.”

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the plume from the volcano had reached about 50,000 feet.

Mount Semeru is about 500 miles southeast of Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, and Java is the archipelago nation’s largest population center.

The eruption follows a series of devastating earthquakes in the country, including one last month that killed more than 300 people.

Last week, Mauna Loa, one of five volcanoes that make up Hawaii’s Big Island, began erupting on Monday for the first time in 38 years.
