The Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) has issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) to 19 companies and consortiums to develop a new 1.5GW solar PV project in Abu Dhabi.

Located in the Ajiban region, the plant is expected to increase Abu Dhabi’s installed solar capacity to around 4GW, complementing installations at Noor Abu Dhabi and Al Dhafra.

Meanwhile, RFPs are used for the development, financing, construction, operation, maintenance and ownership of plants and related infrastructure.

According to EWEC, the successful developer will own up to 40 percent of the entity, while the remainder will be held indirectly by the Abu Dhabi government.

The developer will also enter into a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with EWEC. The structure of the PPA will be an energy purchase agreement where the EWEC will only pay for the net electricity supplied by the plant.

Previously, a total of 43 companies and consortia submitted letters of intent (EOI) to EWEC. Following the EOI phase in May 2022, 19 companies and consortia qualified for the RFP phase. The RFP provides detailed requirements and proposed technical parameters for projects to support qualified companies and consortiums in developing their submissions.

The companies and consortium are expected to respond to the RFP by the end of the first quarter of 2023. EWEC will then hold a public event to identify companies and consortiums that have submitted proposals.
