EWEC signs clean energy deal for 2023 World Utilities Congress

The Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC), the leading company in the UAE for integrated coordination of hydropower planning, procurement and supply, has signed an agreement to lead UAE energy company Taqa and dmg events to the second year of the World Supply Clean Energy Utilities Congress 2023, continuing its strategy Partnerships to support the event’s sustainability initiatives.

The World Utilities Conference, hosted by Taqa in Abu Dhabi from 8-10 May, will bring together global energy leaders, policy makers, innovators and industry professionals from across the hydro utilities value chain to discuss the issues shaping the industry today Key trends and challenges.

Organizers said the congress, which occupies a unique place in the energy calendar between COP27 in Egypt and COP28 in the UAE, provides a platform to explore the latest products, innovations and technological advancements in the global power and water sector.

It will welcome 20+ Departments of Energy, 150+ regional and international exhibiting companies, 10,000+ utility professionals, 250 industry-renowned speakers, 1,000 conference delegates, and host 60+ strategic and technical sessions.

As Clean Energy Partner, EWEC will provide World Utility Congress with a Clean Energy Certificate (CEC) covering the energy used at the event, reflecting the hydropower industry’s commitment to decarbonize its operations.

CEC is the only accredited tool in Abu Dhabi that verifies that electricity consumed is from clean generation sources.

Commenting on the key partnership, CEO Othman Al Ali said: “We are delighted to be the Clean Energy Partner of World Utility Congress, extending our partnership for a second year and supporting the event in its sustainable development plans and a commitment to reduce our carbon footprint.”

“Since its launch, the CEC market has expanded significantly to encompass the events sector in addition to energy, industrial, real estate and healthcare. Our ongoing partnership with the World Utilities Congress supports the events industry in reducing carbon emissions,” Al Ali noted.

“As we progress in the run-up to the Year of Sustainable Development and COP28, clean energy certificates play a vital role in supporting entities in achieving their sustainable development goals,” he added.

The CEC program has been a successful initiative, attracting a large number of organizations that are playing a vital role in supporting the UAE to take concrete steps to combat climate change.

Major entities such as Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), Emirates Global Aluminum Company (EGA) and Aldar have purchased these certificates and signed strategic clean energy partnerships with EWEC to guarantee their electricity consumption comes from solar or nuclear energy.

Notable speakers at the event included UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure Suhail Bin Mohamed Al Mazrouei, US Office of Nuclear Energy’s Dr. Kathryn Huff, Bahrain’s Minister of Electricity and Water Yaser bin Ebrahim Humaidan and Finland’s Minister of Economic Affairs and Employment Mikarin Tila.

EDF Chairman and CEO Luc Rémont, Baker Hughes President and CEO Lorenzo Simonelli and Taqa Group CEO and Managing Director Jasim Husain Thabet were also confirmed.
