The daughter of an executed Israeli spy has asked the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to help repatriate his body from Syria.

during an interview i24 News Sophie Ben-Dor, daughter of Israeli Mossad agent Eli Cohen, Arabic-language media have called on the UAE and its ambassador to Israel to help return Cohen’s remains, nearly 60 years after he was executed by Syrian authorities in May 1965 on charges of espionage.

“I ask the UAE, which has a greater presence in our country and on the international stage, to help us mediate and demand and reach an agreement with the Syrians for the return of my father’s remains,” Ben-Dor said.

“I think it’s a brilliant idea,” she added. “I’m not alone in thinking of this, but it seems to me that it’s an unusual channel, and it’s also an Arabic channel. I think we’ll get a clearer answer. If there’s motivation, there’s a chance it could happen sooner.” . The family will make a formal appeal to the UAE ambassador to Israel.”

Syria has rejected Israeli and Cohen family efforts to retrieve the spy’s body for decades, and his wife Nadia made the first request in November 1965.The Cohen family also requested Russian The government sought aid last year, leading media reports at the time that Moscow was trying to locate his remains, but had made no progress.

After that failure, amid the isolation Russia is experiencing over its ongoing and contentious invasion of Ukraine, the UAE was seen by the family as a potentially suitable avenue to retrieve the spy’s body, hoping to retrieve the spy’s body from a new facility in Abu Dhabi. It has benefited from the normalization of relations with Damascus and its recent relationship with Tel Aviv.

Ben-Dor’s request comes weeks after Mossad chief David Barnia declassified the last messages Cohen sent to intelligence agencies before his arrest. In intercepted communications, Cohen told the agency that then-Syrian President Amin Hafez met with the military high command at 5 p.m., apparently providing information that helped Israel win the 1967 Six-Day War key intelligence.
