Experts Discuss Treatment Guidelines for Rare Respiratory Diseases

[ad_1]

More than 110 pulmonologists, rheumatologists and radiologists, as well as three international speakers, focused on the latest scientific guidelines to improve clinical outcomes for patients with rare respiratory diseases at the event in Dubai.

The Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) Summit was organized by Boehringer Ingelheim, one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies, and took place in Dubai on 25-26 November.

The event is dedicated to discussing the treatment and management of rare respiratory diseases such as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), progressive fibrotic interstitial lung disease (PF-ILD) and systemic sclerosis-associated interstitial lung disease (SSc -ILD).

The conference is accredited by the American Association for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) and the British Association for Continuing Medical Education (BACME).

Interstitial lung disease is a group of conditions characterized by a buildup of scar tissue in the lungs that worsens over time, making it difficult to breathe, which in turn reduces the amount of oxygen that gets into the blood. People with this disease often experience deterioration in lung function, which leads to a decrease in their quality of life.

While there is no cure for ILD, there are drugs called “anti-fibrotic drugs” that can help slow the progression of lung damage and make a difference — but early diagnosis is crucial.

The ILD Summit helps drive conversations around this topic, with the ultimate goal of facilitating discussions with medical experts across multiple specialties about the latest scientific updates in diagnosis and management so they can provide the greatest therapeutic benefit to patients, a statement said.

During the summit, attendees were provided with the latest scientific data and insights into the effective detection and management of ILD, with expert speakers emphasizing the need for a multidisciplinary approach to effectively treat this rare disease. Workshops were also held on topics such as high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) readouts to help address challenges in the diagnosis of pulmonary fibrosis in ILD.

Mohammed Al-Tawil, Regional Managing Director and Head of Human Pharmaceuticals, Boehringer Ingelheim India, Middle East, Turkey and Africa (‘IMETA’), said: “Pulmonary fibrosis is a major challenge for patients with ILD and can damage the lungs. Cause irreversible harm, resulting in reduced quality of life. At Boehringer Ingelheim, we build on a 100-year tradition of respiratory care by working closely with the medical community to address rare respiratory diseases. Our ILD Summit A peer-to-peer exchange of valuable, up-to-date scientific information that shapes the treatment landscape in clinical practice. Through this forum, we gather actionable insights from healthcare professionals across multiple disciplines to identify what could significantly improve the lives of patients with this rare condition the best treatment method.”

Dr Waleed Abulrab Hafiz, Consultant Rheumatologist at Al Noor Hospital in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, said: “ILDs are difficult to diagnose, partly because they can present in a variety of ways. Systemic sclerosis, for example, primarily affects the skin but can also affect other organs, including lungs, and may be involved in the risk of developing pulmonary fibrosis, which can lead to life-threatening complications2,3. It is vital that we do everything we can to limit its progression – and early detection is the first step. Like Events like the ILD Summit allow different specialties — including rheumatologists and pulmonologists — to meet and discuss how best to work with each other to improve outcomes.”

Saniya Khan, consultant pulmonary and critical care at the Cleveland Clinic in Abu Dhabi, highlighted the impact ILD can have on those affected, saying: “Pulmonary fibrosis can be challenging; Quality of life. However, effective anti-fibrotic treatments are available and can make a difference if we can ensure early diagnosis and a rapidly designed course of treatment for patients with ILD. Access to new scientific data presented through workshops and patient case studies , scientific forums like the ILD Summit help to encourage collaboration with the medical community to improve treatment outcomes that ultimately benefit our patients.”

In addition to the forum, Boehringer Ingelheim runs an “Awareness Programme” that provides local and regional experts with knowledge and international best practice in ILD management through a multidisciplinary approach. Through this program, the company provides a platform for local and international experts to connect and explore opportunities to establish ILD centers, which is important to improve patient outcomes.

Boehringer Ingelheim has also developed a bilingual ILD website in English and Arabic called Life With Pulmonary Fibrosis, which provides resources for Arabic-speaking patients who want to learn more about their condition and help them find ways to enhance their physical and mental health, statements. – TradeArabia News Service
