“The Dubai Expo 2020 is one of the largest events in the region. I think it is the perfect platform to showcase my creative work to millions of visitors within six months,” said internationally renowned artist Shahid Rassam.
Speaking at a press conference of the Pakistani Association in Dubai, Rasam said that he will use the “Quran” as part of the world’s largest Quran to be exhibited at the 2020 Dubai World Expo.
Award-winning artist Shahid Rassam is developing the first project to cast the Quran with aluminum and gilded text. He said that he will show “Quran Rahman-the core of the Quran” as part of the project. His creative concept is in line with their “creating ideas and creating the future” at the World Expo.
“I will use about 200 kilograms of gold and 2,000 kilograms of aluminum to cast about 80,000 words on 550 pages. There will be 150 words on each page,” Rassam said.
2025 deadline
The creative artist stated that he promised to complete the project by 2025 after showing some of the projects at Expo 2020 Dubai.
Rassam is the head of the Arts and Crafts College of the Karachi Arts Council. Despite the challenging global environment after the Covid-19 pandemic, the wise and visionary leadership of the UAE is still able to host the six-month Expo. He appreciates this.
In detailing the project, he said that the Quran was carved on a high-quality canvas with aluminum and gilded letters for the first time in more than 1,400 Islamic history.
“So far, this holy book has been written using the traditional methods of paper, cloth and animal skins. I accepted the challenge to do something different and have been successful so far,” Rassam said.
200 artists participated in the project
According to the creative artist, the size of the Quran is 6.5 feet x 8.5 feet, excluding the frame.
“I have trained my students and a group of talented artists to work on different aspects of the world’s largest Quran. There are now about 200 artists working on this project,” Rassam said.
For one question, he said that this iconic project was self-funded, but his friends supported the initiative.
“I would like to welcome any support from the community. This is a great and unique project. Without the broad support of all sectors of society, it would not be easy to implement,” he said.
In answer to the question that the project will be displayed at the World Expo, he said that it has not yet been finalized.
“As a Pakistani, I hope it should be exhibited in the Pakistan Pavilion. I am also talking with other participating countries that are willing to show my work in their pavilions,” said Rasam.
Magnificent project
The President of the Dubai Pakistan Association, Dr. Faisal Ikram, said that an overseas Pakistani and an award-winning artist have completed a magnificent project, which is a proud moment.
“Mr. Rassam has accepted a huge challenge, and we are all anxiously waiting to see his outstanding work at the 2020 Dubai Expo,” he said.
“The Dubai Pakistan Association pledges its full support for Shahid Rassam to showcase this noble project at the exhibition that begins this week,” said Dr. Ikram.
According to Irfan Mustafa, a Dubai-based entrepreneur and leading corporate leader, Shahid Rassam is a well-known artist, known for his quality works.
Mustafa said: “I have full confidence in Shahid Rassam, and I believe that he will display high-quality works of art at Expo 2020 Dubai.”
