Expo 2020 Dubai: Four quiet rooms help relieve tension-News

The decompression zone is modeled on the dark sensory room of the Dubai Autism Center

Expo 2020 Dubai has designed four quiet rooms for visitors who may be overwhelmed by the dazzling array of events lined up at the world’s greatest exhibition that may open this Friday.

The “decompression zone” is based on the dark sensory room of the Dubai Autism Center, providing a respite for people with autism spectrum or those with anxiety or sensory allergies.

There is an interesting background story behind the origin of these rooms.

When Reem Al Hashmy, Director General of Expo 2020 Dubai, was visiting the Dubai Autism Center, she stopped in the dark sensory room of the facility, where children learned to regulate the brain’s response to external stimuli.

Nicholas Orland, head of the autism program at the Dubai Autism Center, said: “She was very impressed with this facility and suggested that we help replicate it at the Expo.”

These four quiet rooms will be part of a truly barrier-free Expo 2020 site, designed to meet all needs and provide various amenities to enhance the capabilities of visitors. These facilities are associated with one of the key sub-themes “Opportunity” Consistent.

The organizer stated that dedicated “quiet rooms” will be located in the information centers of visitor centers 1, 3, 4, and 6.

According to the official website of the Expo, each room will contain a sofa, innovative sensory cabins and sensory corners for “people to feel over-stimulated, overwhelmed or anxious”.

The World Expo recently obtained the certification of the famous “Sensory Accessibility Activities” by the International Sensory Accessibility Committee. This is the first time the certificate has been issued to an event connecting the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia.
