Ezra Furman has always identified with Ally Sheedy’s role in The Breakfast Club.
The 35-year-old singer – who came out as transgender last year – is a big fan of John Hughes’ 1985 cult classic and is a special for the actress’ “cool, outsider alter ego, Alison Reynolds.” fan.
Ezra — who has a song on her new album “All of us Flames” called “Ally Sheedy in The Breakfast Club” — told Esquire magazine: “I’ve probably seen that movie 90 times. The character of Ally Sheedy has always been is my favorite.
“She claws out in such a cool, outsider and feminine way.
“I kind of wanted to look like her, but actually, the exact same thing was on me.”
But Ezra doesn’t like the preppy makeover of the character at the end of the film.
She said: “Come on! No one likes that version of her more.
“And then again, I don’t want to be a snob.
“I think it’s touching, I don’t know…she does look happier in the end.
“She’s not as cool, but she seems happier.”
Another track on the album, “Come Close,” reflects the way Ezra “touched” her with the “poison” she experienced as a queer person.
She said: “Of course I don’t want to be sexually approached on the street, but I have some kind of friendship with these people. In a way, people who are really lost.
“The brokenness of a rejected creature.
“I guess queer people are supposed to be vitriolic, ‘I don’t care what anyone thinks’, and that’s important, but there’s another part, you’re not vitriolic and proud, you just feel the poison and let it touch you, which It’s an important part of my emotional life.
“The voice of transphobia, the voice in my head that I can’t shut down.
“I think that song is where that feeling is.”
