Experts from G42 Abu Dhabi are working with the Mercedes team to understand the challenges they face and provide solutions for the eight consecutive F1 Constructors’ World Champions.

This level of collaboration follows a partnership agreement signed earlier this year between G42, the artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing technology company, and the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team. The multi-year agreement aims to unlock the full potential of artificial intelligence and provide Mercedes and drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell with vital data and insights.

Mercedes-AMG Petronas Team Principal and CEO Toto Wolff had a quick meeting with G42 CEO Peng Xiao in Abu Dhabi ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Speaking to a select group of journalists, the duo expressed hope that the deployment of artificial intelligence software and solutions into the Mercedes team’s operations will yield positive results.

Wolff noted that the partnership will speed up Mercedes’ learning process and performance.

“The organization is very agile, so it will accelerate our learning tremendously.”

In their first meeting, there was an immediate “chemistry” with Peng that set the tone for the collaboration, Wolf said.

“When Peng and I first met at the game, I thought it could be a good relationship. The chemistry between the two actually made the whole wheel go. With Peng, I saw the same Ambition, desire and agility, to make things happen. It made me believe that the leaders of these two organizations have the same mindset and that they really can do great things,” Wolfe said.

Wolf revealed that the partnership has started with a “really good” workshop.

“We’ve identified workflows that make sense.”

Asked whether the insights would be useful in Hamilton’s race to the podium in Australia this season, Wolff stressed it was the “early stages” of the partnership.

“At this stage, it’s information exchange. Presumably the data collected by Peng’s team, saying where are we as a Formula 1 team? What are the simulation tools? What are the artificial intelligence tools? Very basic existence. What’s the process like? Actual Up, what’s behind the pit stops? How do we measure that? What are the interesting outcomes?”

Meanwhile, Shaw stressed that the G42 hopes to make a “real impact” on the F1 circuit.

“Our ultimate goal is not just to do some general research, but to have a real impact in this specific area. To do this, we need deep partnerships and long-term commitments. We believe we have found the best partnership possible . Later, hopefully, what we do together translates to other broader use cases in the industry.”

Shaw said the G42 is pursuing a human-centric approach aimed at helping drivers and team members. “Our goal is not to do experiments together to replace human drivers. But we want to push the boundaries of what’s possible. As a scientist, I do believe that one day machines can drive cars better. But the real pursuit here is human-centric,” Xiao added road.

Wolff believes the partnership will pay dividends on and off the track in the long run.

“We’ve started some projects, but I’m sure we’re going to do a lot more. Looking back 10 years, we’ll see that it’s been really fruitful for both organizations,” Wolfe said.

Before heading to Azerbaijan, Wolff added that coming to Abu Dhabi has been a great experience. “I really enjoy coming here and spending time with smart, kind people.”
