DURBAN – Family and friends of a South African man stranded in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) went to the country’s embassy in Pretoria on Friday to ask him to return.

Sello Tsolo has been in the Gulf state for nine years, three of which were jailed for crimes he denies.

He initially traveled to the UAE to sign a company’s shares, but claims he was later tricked into signing a debt confirmation of R2 million written in Arabic.

In 2013, Tsolo was the project manager for the local municipality of Setsoto in the Free State.

At the time, he was running a dairy project with operating costs in excess of R600 million.

The city government did not have the money, and Indian businessman Amit Lamba offered to pay it in exchange for a majority stake.

Lamba allegedly offered Tsolo shares in his company and invited him to the UAE to sign the deal, which he said was a scam.

He was prevented from returning due to an outstanding R2 million debt.

Tsolo’s son Teboho said the past nine years have been painful.

“We lost his family and he couldn’t attend their funeral. We also lost our house. It was quite painful to take on the full responsibility of my sisters while he was still alive.”

Tsolo’s family and friends said they would not give up until he was allowed to go home.
