A driver’s license is a prized possession in the UAE and one of the top items on a resident’s to-do list. The process of obtaining a license is very thorough, requiring several hours of driving lessons and a multi-part assessment.

These procedures ensure that drivers follow traffic rules once they start driving their vehicles on UAE roads.

Serious traffic offenses, such as driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, can result in the suspension of a driver’s license, in addition to fines and imprisonment imposed by the court.

Violations related to driving licences can result in fines of up to Dh3,000 and, in some cases, vehicle confiscation. Here is a list of fines:

  • Driving with a foreign-issued licence, except where permitted: AED 400 fine
  • Driving an unlicensed vehicle: Dh400 fine, black point 12
  • Driving with expired license: Dh500 fine, 4 demerit points, confiscation of vehicle for 7 days
  • Without driving license: Dh400 fine
  • Failure to surrender driving licence at first traffic violation accumulation of maximum black points: Dh1,000 fine
  • Failing to surrender driving licence when accumulating maximum black spot for second traffic violation: Dh2,000 fine
  • Failing to surrender driving licence when accumulating maximum black spot for third traffic offence: Dh3,000 fine
