April 3 (United Press International) — Dutch commodities trader Vitol said on Monday it delivered its first-ever cargo of liquefied natural gas from the United States to a terminal in Finland.

“The opening of the terminal will strengthen energy security in Finland and the Baltic region, and facilitate the flow of LNG from around the world to European industry and consumers,” said Pablo Galante Escobar, Head of European LNG at Vitol.

Of the total delivered last year, around 67% of LNG deliveries went to Europe, Vitol said. Meanwhile, Finland only started receiving small quantities of LNG from the United States last year.
“A total of seven cargoes will arrive at the port of Inkoo in Finland in spring and summer,” Vitol said in a statement.
If not already, the US is poised to become the world’s leading LNG exporter, surpassing Australia and Qatar. U.S. LNG exports averaged 10.6 Bcf/d last year, and the government expects them to hit 12.7 Bcf/d next year.
