A Finnish women’s rights activist has recounted her ordeal in detention in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), saying she will take legal action against the UAE government’s imprisonment and torture.
according to Emirates Airline LeakTiina Jauhiainen plans to draw international attention to the gross human rights violations that are taking place in the Persian Gulf countries.
Jauhiainen announced at a conference last week in Geneva, Switzerland, that she would not remain silent in the face of what she experienced in prison and that she intends to take legal action at the European Court of Justice and file a lawsuit against her for torture in the UAE.
During the event, Emirati security forces held her in an unknown and extremely cold place, repeatedly threatened her with death, and forced her to write her confession and sign official documents in Arabic, she said.
Jauhiainen used to live in the United Arab Emirates. She was arrested and tortured for her involvement in a failed 2018 attempt by Princess Latifah, daughter of UAE Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, to escape from her father.
The Finnish campaigner then told British women: “I would like to advise you to think twice before going to the UAE and never be [so-called] The safe and tolerant society that some try to portray [of the country]. “
Back in March 2020, female Emirati prisoner Maryam al-Balushi attempted suicide by cutting a vein in her arm at a detention centre in the UAE, months after she reported being subjected to various forms of torture and threatened with rape.
The International Movement for Freedom in the UAE (ICFUAE) said in a statement at the time that Barush committed suicide at al-Wathba prison outside the capital Abu Dhabi due to her deteriorating mental state following threats. The public prosecution because she refused to record her confession in official channels.
Balushi was arrested on November 19, 2015, and charged with financing “terrorism” after making donations to a Syrian family. According to ICFUAE, she insists the donation was made in good faith.
The human rights source, who asked not to be named, also revealed that Barush had been denied treatment for months for cirrhosis of the liver and kidney stones.
UAE authorities have similarly refused to care for another female detainee, identified as Amina al-Abdouli, who suffers from anemia and liver disease.
In May 2019, female detainee Alia Abdel Nour died of cancer after being denied emergency medical care by prison officials.
