Fire at Ciudad Juarez immigration center kills at least 39

March 28 (United Press International) — A fire at an immigration center in Ciudad Juárez, across the Mexican border from El Paso, Texas, killed at least 39 “foreign migrants” Monday night and sent 20 others to local hospitals.

National Migration Institute of the Mexican Ministry of the Interior said in a translated statement Those killed were not Mexican citizens. The fire is said to have broken out in the “accommodation area” of the centre.

The institute said 68 men from Central and South America lived in migrant center.

“Given the facts, communication and coordination were established with consular authorities from different countries to implement operations that would enable the full identification of deceased immigrants,” the institute said.

“INM expressed its willingness to assist legal inquiries to clarify these unfortunate events. INS will promptly monitor the evolution of the health conditions of those hospitalized and will provide full support to the families of the victims.”

Andrea Chavez, Ciudad Juarez’s federal representative, said she was waiting to know more information about what happened.
