More than 100 firefighters battled towering flames and thick smoke from a seven-storey blaze in central Sydney on Thursday as fire services warned it was spreading.

“The building began to collapse while the fire began to spread to several adjacent buildings, including residential apartments,” NSW Fire and Rescue said in a statement.

Video of the fire showed an entire top-floor wall toppled over, shattering into pieces and falling into the street below, with the building orange in flames.

Water hoses poured water into the building, and all the windows were lit by flames.

The body of a burning van was parked in front.

Pictures posted on social media showed flames rising almost as high as the building itself, shooting into the sky.

Emergency services said they deployed more than 100 firefighters and 20 fire engines to “work hard to contain and extinguish the fire” on Randall Street near the city’s Central Station.

“The public is urged to avoid the area as fire operations continue,” the fire department said, as emergency vehicle sirens echoed through city streets.
