First UAE Ladies Tour route revealed

The official route and jerseys for the inaugural UAE Women’s Tour were unveiled at the Abu Dhabi Cycling Club on Tuesday.

The first-ever UCI Women’s World Tour event to be held in the Middle East, the UAE Women’s Tour will take place on a 468-kilometre route, with riders traversing the country’s unique and varied terrain, passing key landmarks.

Running from February 9th to 12th, the four stages present multiple challenges for the riders, with three challenges for the sprinters and one stage finish for the climbers. The race ends at the top of Jebel Hafeet.

The UCI Women’s World Tour, organized by the Abu Dhabi Sports Council (ADSC), will be held from 20-26 February ahead of the fifth edition of the Men’s World Tour, the UAE Tour.

Of the 20 teams preparing to compete, Team UAE ADQ is the country’s first professional women’s cycling team. The team consists of 16 drivers from nine countries.

Bringing this event into the UCI Women’s World Tour schedule is important for international cycling.

It showcases the growth of the sport and gives local cycling enthusiasts more opportunities to experience world-class racing in the region.

Aref Al Awani, Secretary General of Abu Dhabi Sports Council, said: “From the very beginning, the UAE Tour has provided a great opportunity to showcase our country’s landmarks and different territories to the world. It also allows us to showcase the popularity of cycling How degrees have grown significantly in the region.

“Today we are delighted to announce the route and jersey for the inaugural UAE Tour Women’s World Tour. We welcome the world’s best female riders to the region and introduce another world-class cycling event to the World Tour calendar.

“Demonstrating the steps we are taking to promote professional women’s cycling in the region, the latest race represents a major milestone in the development of the sport in the country,” he added.

Fabrizio D’Amico, Chief Operating Officer, RCS Sports and Events and UAE Tour Director, said: “We are proud to partner with Abu Dhabi Sports Council and bring the UAE Tour Ladies to the region. The aim is to make this tournament a UCI One of the greatest and most important tournaments in the Women’s World Tour calendar.

“We strongly believe it will bring the same level or excitement as the men’s race and bring a new audience to the sport. The race is an extremely important addition to the racing calendar and provides a unique opportunity to showcase the country’s And even the development of women’s cycling across the continent.”

At the same time, the organizers also announced the official route and jerseys for the fifth edition of the UAE Tour.

The UAE Men’s Tour will start and finish in Abu Dhabi and include four sprint stages, two mountain stages best suited to peloton climbers and a 17.2km high-speed team time trial.

This year, the UAE Tour’s seven stages total more than 1,028 kilometres.

Riders will traverse a variety of landscapes in the region and the race will feature a significant elevation gain of 3,500 meters, almost all of which will be concentrated in stages 3 and 7. The 2023 UAE Tour has two summit finishes, one at Jebel Jais, with previous stage winners including Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard, both of whom have won the coveted Tour de France yellow jersey, and Jebel Hafeet, It was an epic climb and Pogacar had three stage victories in the last three editions of the Tour.
