A 73-year-old gunman has killed five people in an apartment complex in suburban Toronto, Canadian police say.
The gunman was also killed by police, authorities said.
York Regional Police Chief James McSwain said one of his officers shot and killed the suspect inside the building in Vaughan, Ont.
Police have not identified the suspect or released the name of the deceased, and the motive for the crime is still unclear.
Whenever there is a death or serious injury involving a police officer, Ontario’s special investigation unit steps in and says the dead man is the 73-year-old suspect.
A person shot by the suspect is being treated in hospital and is expected to survive, the police chief said.
Mr MacSween said he had no details on whether the shooter was a resident of the building.
Police evacuated the building, but MacSween said there was no further threat to the community. On Monday, residents were allowed to go home early.
Mass shootings are rare in Canada, and Toronto has long prided itself on being one of the safest big cities in the world.
Canadians are nervous about anything that might suggest they are getting closer to America’s experience of gun violence.
