Sorority recruiting is all the rage on social media. From dressing up for workshop week to fun TikToks, everyone has their sights set on Greek life.
Hiring or rushing is how college women join sororities. During the recruiting process, potential new members walked around the sorority row all day, meeting with every LSU sorority, hoping to find their home away from home. The days are long and packed with parties. There is not much time to run back to the dormitory.
LSU’s Panhellenic Committee provides potential new members or PNM with a bag they must use. Panhellenic President Olivia Christopher said it was paramount to pack everything you needed during the long days. Fortunately, you can find most of the items you need with a quick trip to Walmart or Target.
Here are the five essential items of your recruiting package:
1. Bag label
Because every PNM has the same bag, Christopher recommends adding a ribbon or name tag. There’s no need to buy anything special, a simple headband or sticker can add a little personality and help make your bag recognizable.
2. Portable Fan
August is one of the hottest months of the year in Louisiana. Staying cool during the day is a tough task. Panhellenic Treasurer Emma Grace Laughlin recommends bringing a portable fan.
“It’s so hot you can’t think when you get that hot,” Laughlin said. “So always carry a fan with you.”
From handheld fans to hands-free neck fans, PNM can carry air conditioners in many ways. Don’t forget the battery!
3. Portable phone charger
Stephanie Lofton, director of recruiting consultants, said potential recruits’ recruiting party schedules can be viewed on their phones, so portable chargers are a must. If PNM’s phone goes down, they won’t be able to keep track of their schedule, Lofton said.
The PowerCore Select 20000 Power Bank, Dual Port Portable Phone Charger is $39.99 and has rave reviews online. Onn portable batteries start as low as $7.98 and are available in a variety of fun colors.
Lofton says her Gamma Chi can always access her schedule if PNM’s phone goes down, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.
4. Umbrella
Louisiana is full of unexpected weather. Don’t be fooled by the clear morning sky. Although a raincoat or umbrella might fill your bag, it’s a must-have. Lofton said she wished she had brought an umbrella with her when hiring.
5. Snacks
Most recruiting parties are back-to-back. Empty conversations are never productive; therefore, it’s always a good idea to pack a snack.
“You won’t know your schedule until you get to that row, so if you’re having a long day, it’s nice to have a snack,” says Christopher.
The LSU Panhellenic Commission announced the creation of the Sierra Frazier Memorial Scholarship Fund for new members in an Aug. 6 Instagram post.
For PNM, the recruiting process can become cumbersome at times. The days are tiring, the weather is unpredictable, and the choices you have to make can get tough. Every PNM will have highs and lows, but being prepared for each one can help relieve some of the stress.
“I know hiring seems like the biggest deal in the world right now, but everything is going the way it’s supposed to,” Laughlin said. “Take a deep breath, relax, and enjoy yourself.”
