Five U.S. police officers charged with violently arresting blacks

Security cameras showed that two Florida police officers kicked a man while he was in handcuffs, and three police officers assaulted another man who was recording the arrest.

Five police officers in Florida have been charged with assault in connection with the violent arrest of two black men last week.

Surveillance video showed that in the early morning of July 26, a 24-year-old policeman chased 24-year-old Dalonta Crudup and entered the lobby of the Royal Palm Hotel in South Beach. The officer pointed a gun at Crudep and ordered Crudep to fall to the ground, and Crudep obeyed. After a while, dozens of other police officers ran into the hall and surrounded Crudep. He could be seen with his hands on the ground.

Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle (Katherine Fernandez Rundle) held a press conference on Monday to announce the First-degree misdemeanor charges of Police Officer David Rivas and Police Officer Steven Serrano.

These officials have been suspended and surrendered on Monday.

Fernandez Rundle stated that additional costs may be incurred.

The incident coincided with a national debate on U.S. policing, mainly triggered by the death in May 2020 George Freud, A black man suffocated to death under the knee of a white police officer Derek Chauvin. Freud’s death triggered protests against police brutality and racism in the country.

In April, the court Found Chauvin guilty Murder and Sentenced him to 22.5 years In prison.

Fernandez Randall said that the body camera footage from the Miami incident showed that Sergeant Jose Perez kicked the handcuffed Crudep three times, while Officer Kevin Perez kicked Crudep at least four times. Second-rate.

“When we saw that kick in the head, then we replayed it, and we saw all the other kicks before it. It was unfathomable. Unspeakable. Unforgivable,” she said.

Fernandez Randall said that surveillance video also showed that 28-year-old Khalid Vaughan used his cell phone to record the arrest of Krudep from about four meters (12 feet) away. Body camera footage showed that when Sabator was dealing with Vaughn, Vaughn stepped back under the direction of a police officer, threw him to the floor and repeatedly punched him. Fernandez Randall said that Rivas and Serrano also attacked Vaughan.

“I started recording it. They have put handcuffs on him. They beat him, turned around, pushed me down, beat me… beat me, elbowed me in the face,” Vaughan told 10 local news in Miami on Monday. “I was really skipped by the police,” he said.

The channel reported that 27-year-old Shariff Cobb also recorded the incident on his mobile phone and was arrested.

Officials said they initially followed Crudup into the hotel because he hit a bicycle patrol while driving the scooter recklessly. The police officer was taken to the hospital for treatment for his leg injuries. Crudup was charged with multiple counts, including serious assault on a law enforcement officer.

Allegations that Vaughan violently resisted arrest and obstructed police investigations have been dropped.

Crudup said he suffered from dark circles under the eyes, bleeding from his jaw and bruised ribs.

“I was beaten, stitched, and went to the hospital,” he told Local 10 News after paying bail on July 27.

He said he did not realize that the police were chasing him because he was wearing headphones and denied that he had hit the police.
