South African officials confirmed the death toll had risen from nine to 14 as a flash flood swept through a church congregation along the Jukskei River in Johannesburg.
Rescue teams resumed search operations on Monday and at least three people are still missing.
Johannesburg emergency services spokesman Robert Mulaudzi said 12 more bodies were found on Sunday, in addition to the two found on Saturday.
Members of the congregation were attending a service by the river when suddenly floodwaters swept away several worshipers.
The riverside service was carried out near the populous town of Alexandra, east of Johannesburg, but some of the bodies were found far downstream in the Jukskei, one of Johannesburg’s largest rivers.
Rescue operations were delayed by heavy rain.
On Monday, the South African Meteorological Service warned that continued heavy rain could lead to more flooding across much of Gauteng this week.
Communities living along the Jukskei River have been warned to proceed with caution.
