Florence Pugh loves not having to worry about her onscreen image.
The 27-year-old actress plays a troubled junkie in “A Good Guy,” and Florence revealed she “likes” not having to worry about her appearance in the Zach Braff-directed film.
The actress, who cut her hair for the role, told Sky News’ Backstage podcast: “I think we have this horrible nature, well, I do sometimes, and I just like to cut some when things go wrong. The hair I left on my own, the idea actually came from when I was younger.
“I just went through a typical teenage depression episode where you’re not quite sure if you’re depressed, so I just bought random things and tried to fix myself quickly, like buy something that will stick to me and maybe I’ll feel better.
“So it was an idea where I said, ‘Well, what if she chops off a piece of her for no reason just to fix something?’ And then all it does is make the whole character stop caring and the hair goes It’s ridiculous, and I like that.”
Florence – who has starred in films such as Don’t Worry Honey, Black Widow and Little Women – finds it refreshing not to have to think about her on-screen presence.
“I’ve always liked playing a character where I don’t have to care about whether the camera is pretty or anything like that — I like not having to think about that,” she said.
The actress is determined to approach the role in a sensitive way, and Florence is “very proud” of her role in the film.
She shared: “Of course it’s very difficult to do something like this because you never want to offend anyone, you don’t want to hurt anyone, you want to get things done – and you end up being a little bit self-harming too – but I’m really rooting for Proud of that. I’m really proud of this work.”
