With the support of Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Florida passed a critical race theory, according to Associated Press News.
In the new bill, private businesses and schools would be prohibited from making white people feel “uncomfortable” or “guilt” when it comes to our nation’s history of racism and discrimination.
Part of the bill reads: “Individuals are not responsible for past actions committed by other members of the same race or gender because of their race or gender. Individuals should not be made to feel discomfort, guilt, distress, or any other form of psychological distress because of their race. .”
Democrats opposed the bill, arguing it seemed unnecessary. State Senator Shevrin Jones said: “No one has ever said white people are responsible for what happened, but I want to ask my white counterparts, are you contributing to what happened or are you saying we have to talk about history?”
Critical race theory has become a relevant topic in the past few months. While Texas and Florida are several states in the South that oppose teaching it in schools, California already has courses in racial studies that students need.
In 2021, Newsom signed, sealed and filed a bill requiring students to take the ethnic studies courses required to graduate from high school.
“The Ethnic Studies program empowers students to learn about their own stories — and the stories of their classmates,” Newsom said.
A press release from Newsom’s office said race studies will “help expand educational opportunities in schools, educate students about California’s diverse communities, and improve student academic engagement and achievement.” Los Angeles Times Report.
Obviously, even if we live in the same country, there are two extremes.
Roommates, what do you think?
