Former Indian teenage tennis star Tanvi Bhatt died in Dubai on Sunday, Indian media reported. She is 21 years old.

Indian media reported that the final ceremony took place on Wednesday.

Tanvi, a former Kerala tennis champion, has been studying for a degree in Psychology and English in Dubai. She is survived by her father, Dr. Sanjay Bhat, mother, Lilan and brother, Adithya, who also represented India in tennis.

When Khaleej Times tried to contact Bhat’s family in India, they politely declined to comment, urging them to maintain privacy during this difficult time.

In 2012, 12-year-old Tanvi won the Under-14 Girls Championship at the Doha Asia Series, but a series of injuries cut short her career. Tanvi suffered an ACL injury at age 14 and 15 and had to undergo two surgeries. She also underwent spinal surgery at 17 and decided to retire from the sport.

She previously trained at the Mahesh Bhupathi Tennis Academy at the Regional Sports Center in Cochin.

“Rafael Nadal, is her hero,” her mother Lilan was quoted as saying by Indian sports magazine Sportsstar on Wednesday.

“She was short-tempered and full of energy… She used to play tennis for four hours a day and then play football with the boys in a race against time for 21 years.”

“We all moved to Dubai and she started playing for her college and even went to Abu Dhabi once for a college game,” she added.
