Former Indian junior tennis star Tanvi Butt died in Dubai on Sunday, according to Indian media reports. She is 21 years old.

Indian media reported that the final ceremony took place on Wednesday.

Former Kerala tennis champion Tanvi has been studying psychology and English in Dubai. She is survived by her father Dr Sanjay Bhat, mother Lilan and brother Adithya, who also represent the Indian nation in tennis.

When Khaleej Times tried to contact Bhat’s family in India, they politely declined to comment and urged them to protect their privacy during this difficult time.

In 2012, 12-year-old Tanvi won the Women’s Under-14 title at the Asia Series in Doha, but a series of injuries cut short her career. Tanvi suffered an ACL injury at the age of 14 and 15 and had to undergo two surgeries. She also had spinal surgery at 17 and decided to quit the sport.

She previously trained at the Mahesh Bhupathi Tennis Academy at the Kochi Regional Sports Centre.

“Rafa (Rafael Nadal) is her hero,” Indian sports magazine Sports Star quoted her mother Lilan as saying on Wednesday.

“She was grumpy and full of energy… She used to play tennis for four hours a day and then play with the boys on the football field, racing against time for 21 years.

“We both moved to Dubai and she started playing for her university and even went to Abu Dhabi University once,” she added.
