Former Legendary Exec Vasco Xu Launches Conqueror Entertainment – Deadline

exclusive: Former Legend Entertainment executive Vasco Xu will join forces with Hong Kong executive Brian Cheng and Chinese venture capitalist Sun Ge to launch an international production venture in Los Angeles and Beijing, Conqueror Entertainment.

Both Cheng and Sun will serve as co-founders, and Xu will serve as co-founder and chief creative officer, overseeing corporate affairs, creative development, production, marketing, distribution and franchise management. Cheng is one of Hong Kong’s largest business families, while Sun is the founder of Chinese venture capital firm Grains Valley.

Xu said the company will develop and produce feature films and series in both Chinese and English for the international and domestic Chinese markets. It will employ a two-track production strategy – producing English content for global distribution, and Chinese content only for the local market.

Conqueror’s first projects include Legend/Tencent’s female action comedy series Killer Maidadapted from the hit Tencent Comics webcomic; R-rated comedy tick tockwritten by Jay Adams, featuring Asian and African-American women; and a buddy comedy my mormon brotherwritten by Gary King.

“Overall, the Chinese and Asian markets have a wealth of excellent and unique materials and talents to be discovered. We will unite well-known Asian IPs with a new generation of young filmmakers to create the next generation of entertainment for the global market,” Xu said.

Zheng and Sun said in a joint statement: “Our goal is to be an entertainment company that spreads the universal story of film and television to the world from an Asian cultural perspective. Vasco has an incredible taste in content and has the industry’s best Excellent talent relationship. This will be a new era for us.”

Xu began his career at Paramount Pictures and CBS Pictures before being hired as an assistant to Mary Parent, Legendary’s vice president of global production.He then took on creative executive roles, working on film, including Pacific Rim: Uprising, skyscraper, Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, Godzilla: King of the Monsters and dune.

He also developed Adam Sandler’s hustle and bustle Sunrise’s live-action mecha movie before being sold to Netflix Gundam and Constance Verity Starring Awkwafina. Xu also helps manage Legendary’s China affairs. Works from his previous independent production venture, Teahouse Pictures, will be incorporated into the new venture.

Cheng is the executive director of NWS Holdings Limited, the flagship of Hong Kong-based conglomerate New World Development, owned by the Cheng family with business interests in infrastructure, services, real estate, hospitality and retail.

Mr. Sun started his career with China Baoan Group and investment bank Guotai Junan Securities. He then founded Gugu, investing in Chinese tech and cultural start-ups, including vaccine maker CanSino Bio, bike-sharing company HelloBike and comics company Dongmantang, which was later acquired by Tencent.
