The exact reason for the arrest is not yet known, but it is related to Mali’s purchase of a jet plane for US$40 million in 2014. His lawyer Kassoum Tapo told Reuters by phone on Thursday, but did not provide more details.
“We have not seen the case file and we cannot speak any further before then,” he said.
The Justice Department did not respond to a request for comment.
Critics at the time claimed that the price paid by the Keita government was too high and that the deal was corrupt. It caused a political scandal, damaged Keita’s presidency and frightened lenders. As a result, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank froze the financing of this West African country.
It is not clear what evidence the prosecutor has against Mecca, nor the reason for his arrest. He served as prime minister from 2017 to 2019 and is seen as a possible candidate for the presidential election. After Keita was removed from the presidency in August last year, the interim authorities promised to hold presidential elections next year.
Colonel Assimi Goita of Mali, who led the coup, is leading the transition and is now the interim president.
