FR73 ~ UAE Type C Ration 24 Hours Pack

The current United Arab Emirates (UAE) Type C ration is a MRE style three meal 24 hour package from Jomipsa which yields 3,400 kcal, writes bob morrison.

UAE ration packs in bags shown on this page, presented to us by a Spanish supplier at IDEX 2023 in Abu Dhabi pronunciation, consisting of edible items produced primarily around September 2022 that were packaged on December 12 of that year and marked with a two-year shelf life. The meat content is halal-certified, as would be expected from food intended only for the Muslim military. This package is very similar to the one released by Bahrain; see: FR45 ~ Bahrain 24 Hours Personal Ration Pack.

The Emirates Type C set menu offers three different menus, two with meat dishes and one with vegetarian options. Each menu is broken down into breakfast, lunch and dinner according to the (bilingual ~ Arabic and English) printing on the tan outer bag and the contents sheet inside. Basic instructions are also printed on the outside of the outer pocket, and there is a four-color UAE flag sticker on each side of the outer pocket. Gross weight is 1800g, my example is Menu 1.

The table of contents lists the three menu types, from which it is evident that they have broadly similar ingredients, common breakfast items listed are: Coffee – 2x2g; Tea – 2x 1.5g; Coffee Whitener, 2x 3g; Sugar – 4x8g : Honey – 1x 15g; Jam – 2x 20g; and (4) Sweet Bran Biscuits – 1x 55g. A breakfast of just biscuits, jam and coffee/tea (personal preference) might seem a little bland for someone from the northern regions who are used to starting the day with a bigger meal, but tend to be less so in warmer climates Eat more meals later in the day. Snacks to complement breakfast are included in each menu in the form of: Dates – 1x 100g; Chocolate Bars – 2x 25g; and (savory) Bran Biscuits – 4x 65g.

Lunch items include 300g retort bags and 2 50g tubs of pineapple, apple or guava cream (a thick fruit spread or puree that can be spooned on or spread over biscuits). The three lunchtime retort bags are: [M1] beef with vegetables; [M2] Chicken Kabosu; and [M3] Vegetable stew with beans.

Dinner items include another 300g retort bag and a Jomipsa 85g cake: [M1] lamb stew with chickpeas; [M2] Mediterranean tuna salad; and [M3] Kushari or Koshary (this is an Egyptian meal usually made of pasta, rice, lentils, chickpeas and tomato sauce). Jomipsa’s is now almost legendary, serving cake bars that are [M1] vanilla, [M2] chocolate and [M3] Cinnamon. Four 18g sachets of isotonic drink powder are also provided, all lemon flavored in my ration pack. Also includes salt and pepper bags, two bags each, for seasoning.

Each pack of inedible items includes: a box of 38 safety matches; a pack of ten paper towels; three individual wet wipes; a set of plastic K/F/S utensils; two packs of flameless ration warmers; an Elbit press Metal cooktop set containing 6 solid fuel tablets and 4 water purification tablets; and a resealable plastic trash bag.

Food quality is generally very good for Jomipsa, but having only three menus to choose from is not ideal in my opinion, as troops will inevitably get bored very quickly if they rely on these packages for more than a few days at a time, which May cause nutritional deficiencies and performance problems. When I raised this issue with the Jomipsa team at IDEX, who were able to offer a very wide range of meal replacements, they agreed, but said they were already talking to customers about giving troops more options in the future.
