The French foreign minister told India Today news channel during a visit to the country on Thursday that France understands and respects India’s energy and other relations with Russia.
Instead of condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February, India called for negotiations and peace. Russia is India’s largest foreign supplier of defense hardware, and India’s imports of Russian crude and coal have soared since the war.

“We know there’s a difference in our relationship with Russia,” Kathryn Colonna said in an interview in which she was asked about India’s oil trade and overall relationship with Russia.
“We know the history of India’s past and present relations with Russia,” Colonna said. “We do respect your country’s decision to continue certain relationships.”
In recent weeks, Western diplomats and other officials have made a series of visits to India as they seek to expand support for a plan by the rich G7 group of nations, including France, to cap Russian oil prices.
