Sinatra: The musical known for hits like ‘My Way’ and ‘New York, New York’
A musical based on the life of the late US singer Frank Sinatra will open in Birmingham in September, producers have confirmed.
The singer, who died in 1998, was best known for “Fly With Me,” “My Way,” and “New York, New York.”
Sinatra: The Musical will have its world premiere at the Delegate Theater in Birmingham on 23 September.
This will be the 70th anniversary of Sinatra’s visit to the city, where he performed on his 1953 UK tour.
The singer’s daughter, Tina Sinatra, believes the musical will bring new light to her father’s life.
“I’m very proud of our new musical output and I’m especially delighted that for the first time we’re giving you a perspective on my dad that you’ve never seen before,” she said in a statement.
Writer Joe DiPietro (Known for What’s New Pussycat? and Memphis) joins forces with Tony Award-winning director Kathleen Marshall (Omnipotent, The Pajama Game) on this production.
Speaking of the influence of Ol’ Blue Eyes, DiPietro said: “When I was growing up, there were two pictures hanging in my grandmother’s kitchen – the Pope and Frank Sinatra.
“So, sitting down with Tina Sinatra and hearing the little-known stories of her father, and then bringing those stories to life — well, I think it’s going to be an unexpected and exciting film. New musical.”
Their goal, Marshall added, was to “create a theatrical evening as stylish, sophisticated and elegant as Mr. Sinatra, with beautiful music from the American Songbook”.
