A joint statement stated that President Emmanuel Macron ordered the French ambassador to return to Washington next week on Wednesday, after he had a phone conversation with US President Joe Biden, aiming to alleviate problems caused by Australia. This meeting is the first communication between the two people since Australia announced the cancellation of the contract to purchase French submarines. This is part of the security agreement reached with the United Kingdom and the United States.

It added: “The two leaders agreed that open consultations between the allies on issues of strategic interest to France and our European partners will benefit the situation.”
It said Biden also agreed that the defense of Europe needs to be strengthened to supplement NATO, a key idea repeatedly put forward by Macron.
The statement said: “The United States also recognizes the importance of a stronger and more capable European defense, which makes a positive contribution to transatlantic and global security and complements NATO.”
