Freshman Survival Guide: Five Tips from LSU Seniors | Entertainment

[ad_1]

As a freshman at one of America’s oldest and most prestigious colleges, it can be scary at first. Adjusting to college life is a process that can take time, but with the help of your senior classmates, it’s easier than ever.

Everyone knows simple advice like going to class and taking notes, but your freshman year is about getting you really engaged and making the most of it. Now is your chance to set the tone for years to come. Here’s what LSU seniors have to say.

1. Network and make connections

“Participate in clubs that belong to your major, as well as participate in events and networking. It’s not only fun, but it’s free,” says Giselle Finley, a junior in costume design.

Networking and making connections are important during college. Now is your chance to gather information and meet new people who share your interests. This is also a great time to expose yourself to new perspectives and ideas that can help you explore yourself and your interests.

This can open doors and provide opportunities and help you feel more connected on campus. Getting an internship during your freshman year can be challenging, but networking now can help make your search for one easier.

2. It doesn’t matter if you don’t know your major

A favorite thing for many freshmen to do is tell everyone about their major. This is usually the first question a new college student is asked. While some people know exactly what they want to do, others may not be so sure.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, at least 80 percent of college students change their majors throughout their college education.

It’s okay to temporarily not know what topics you want to focus on. During your freshman year, you can explore your likes and dislikes by using your resources and learning about the people around you.

Don’t limit yourself to your major and miss out on opportunities to explore your passions. Electives are an important part of university courses and may even be part of your degree in the future. While majors may be the first thing on your mind now, minor A great way to explore new interests or expand old ones.Provided by Louisiana State University 330 professional courses and 115 minors, from ceramics to sugar engineering.

3. don’t delay

In college, you’ll have a lot going on with classes, clubs, and friends. The best strategy for avoiding stress and feeling cluttered is to exercise your time management skills. Camryn Marshall, a third-year fashion design student, advises you to keep an eye on your work.

“Don’t procrastinate, because then there will be pressure,” Marshall said. “Have good communication with your professors and complete your assignments a few days before the assignment is due.”

Seniors like Marshall have found that starting assignments early allows more time to go back and make corrections, leading to better grades.

4. Put your mental health first

Mental health helps individuals determine how to deal with stress, connect with others, and make healthy choices. Jaylin Darensbourg, a junior studying film and television, encourages incoming freshmen to take care of their health.

“Stick to your studies and put your mental health first,” Darrensburg said. “Take your time to complete your tasks, and when you feel overwhelmed, take a step back and take a breath.”

It’s easy to get caught up with a lot of homework, which can lead to a decline in your mental health. As easy as it sounds, take a breath and take it one step at a time. Clay Center for Young Healthy Minds estimates 73% of students experienced some kind of mental health crisis while in college. While it may seem like it sometimes, you’re not alone.

Mental health tips include getting enough sleep, drinking plenty of water, exercising, and engaging in activities that interest you. LSU offers a variety of resources for mental healthLike ThePhone, students with the 24-hour crisis counseling and support line can call or text 225-924-5781. 5. Study the material, not just study it

Do yourself a favor and study your class material. Just remembering it will hurt you in the long run. Kinesiology senior Alandria Garrett warns freshmen to watch out for cumulative homework.

“Many professors will use past course material in other assignments later in the course,” Garrett said. “Learning it prepares you for whatever your teacher gives you.”

Anyone can “get grades”, but learning and application is the difference between passing and success. The skills you learn from courses during your freshman year are the skills you will use throughout college and beyond. When it comes to finding a job, career professionals are looking for what you can bring, not just what you can remember.
