Friends of the UAE to launch the region’s first standalone climate change accelerator, led by Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan

New York, September 20, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Today, during New York Climate Week, the establishment of the UAE Independent Climate Change Accelerator (UICCA) was announced. UICCA is a non-partisan climate action entity that will bring together members of the public and private sectors, including academic institutions and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), to advance the UAE’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. According to guidelines set by the United Nations Environment Programme, a green economy is “low carbon, resource efficient and socially inclusive”, putting social equity, well-being and minimal environmental risk at the heart of decision-making. This shift will help boost GDP growth, increase employment opportunities and strengthen the UAE’s position as a global environmental, social and governance (ESG) hub and a climate action pioneer.

In addition to serving as catalysts for a knowledge-based green economy and attracting global talent to the UAE’s sustainable development sector, the accelerators will foster international business, innovation and technology partnerships to achieve the common goal of combating climate change. Key areas of focus will include electric vehicles, sustainable fuels, energy efficiency, green buildings, smart cities, carbon capture and storage, nature-based solutions, and the growing fields of agtech and climate technology.

About the UAE Independent Climate Change Accelerator (UICCA):

UICCA is an independent climate change entity that brings together the private sector, government entities, academia and NGOs/international organizations. The entity will provide stakeholders with non-partisan advice and recommended actions to drive net-zero emissions in the UAE by 2050.This will include advice and recommendations on positive climate action to reduce climate-related risks in the UAE before, during and after COP28 United Arab Emirates.

UICCA aims to accelerate the transition to a green economy, which is necessary to achieve the net zero and climate agenda promised by the UAE. This will allow the UAE economy to benefit from the global momentum around climate action, and will inform UAE policies to enable the transition to a green economy and have a strategic impact on the UAE’s GDP and economic growth.
