Earlier in the episode, he nearly died by suicide in a twisted attempt at redemption. But at the end of the finale, Joe (in the false identity of Professor Jonathan Moore) slashes his way through London and becomes hilarious. He’s at one with his murderous side, and seems happier than he was in “You.”

Season 4 begins with an attempt to start a new life as Jonathan, a professor at the University of London who soon discovers he has a serial killer on his side. At the end of episode 5 of “You,” Netflix’s split season, Joe believes the killer is Rhys Montrose (Ed Speleers), a brilliant writer and upstart politician. In Joe’s completely unreliable version of events, Reese sets him up as the rich-eating killer who is murdering members of the upper-class society groups that Joe has infiltrated.
but joe, certainly, is a serial killer. How else is it possible? He is the problem; it is him. In the series’ seventh-episode twist, we learn that Joe barely even knows the real Reese, whom he imagines to be his enemy: Joe’s “you,” the person he tells his story in the series template, actually Yes, himself. (He discovers this fact after murdering a completely innocent Rhys.)
Four seasons into “you,” Joe’s “you” is him. “I think that’s the only way for it to go,” Badgley said.
Gamble said the writers had been preparing for Joe’s split personality. “Joe just gets crazier every season. If you go back in time, his thinking has always been delusional,” she said. She noted that he had hallucinations in season 3 when he “sees another version of himself”.
“Since the beginning of season 1, we’ve been quietly building a second-half turning point — we’ve always had that in our pockets as what we wanted to do: drive him completely crazy,” Gamble said.
Badgley was thrilled, though, because he Not playing with his dark side. Splitting Mr. Hyde as Joe against Spillers means “we get to see the fun of it, not the real me playing me,” he says.
For Badgley, after three and a half seasons of writing most of his lines in Joe’s voiceover, recording alone in a studio, having an on-set partner like Speleers’ Rhys was a total novelty. “No one has experienced Joe’s lack of talk the way I have,” he said. “Actually, no one but me knows how little he talks – because I have to leave and never talk!”
“It’s true,” Gamble said. “There were a lot of days where he showed up, but he didn’t have any actual dialogue. Someone was reading a voiceover, and Payne was moving his eyes.”
During a breakfast interview in Brooklyn, Badgley was amused when he remembered a conversation he had with Ritchie at a show party and she asked him how his day on set was going. He replied, “‘Oh, that’s good, because I can finally shoot a normal scene,'” Badgley recalls. “I realized that scene was waking up, and I decided I had to kill myself, and then I was talking to my split personality in the kitchen. When I said that, I laughed, ‘Oh, this is a normal scene.’ “
By the end, Joe has realized what he’s done — namely, he killed a bunch of people, kidnapped his love of season 3, Marianne (Tati Gabriel), and locked her in a In a cage in the basement of an abandoned building. He decides he needs to end his life. But in reality, he wants to kill Reese, who bothers him.
“Yeah, Joe was suicidal; technically what he was doing was trying to kill Reese,” Bagley said. “What he wanted to do was kill a killer.”
In “your” logic and in Joe Goldberg’s twisted mind, that reason makes sense to him. “He’s coming up with a logical solution to save people,” Badgley said. “The thing is, he actually wants to save these people!”
As Joe stands on a bridge over the Thames talking to Reese, he seems to have faced the reality that everything Joe does, regardless of his intentions, will result in death. “Each time, I try: I make it perfect, and it’s never enough,” Jo said bitterly, before pushing “Rhys” away and jumping off herself. (He survived, of course, and woke up in the hospital with Kate at his bedside.)
“I think it does kind of feel like a redemption arc for the audience,” Bagley said.
Badgley directed the show’s ninth episode, which neatly sets up the closing events: Joe wants to free Marienne, but doesn’t know how, and his student Nadia (Amy-Leigh Hickman) finds Marienne in the basement and sets her sights on He-Joe is real Enough of Reese pestering him. At the end of the finale, Joe framed — and, of course, killed — Nadia’s friend Edward (Brad Alexander) to take the blame for the rich-eating killer. He also frames Nadia for Eddie’s death. Jo calmly explained to her that she could survive even though she would go to jail, and in the final moments of the show, Jo said in voiceover that Nadia did not defend herself at trial.
Will Nadia get Joe’s ass in the supposed fifth and final season of “You”? “She was great,” Badgley said, while also claiming he didn’t know what to expect. “She was the most convincing.”
“You” is a dark satire, a multilayered character study of a promising young man so traumatized by childhood abuse and neglect that his sense of right and wrong becomes completely distorted.This makes it fertile ground, apparently, not only for one, but for two Taylor Swift references in the last two episodes – one of which is an Easter egg.
In the Badgley-directed episode, when Joe learns that his Rhys gang has kidnapped Marienne—instead of getting her back to Paris, as Joe thinks—and he figures out where he’s hiding her, he can’t Let the password work on the cage. “One, two, one, three, eight, nine,” he sang several times, becoming frantic. What do these particular numbers mean? “The code to the cage is Taylor Swift’s birthday,” Badgley said with a laugh.
But Joe is no Swiftie, no matter what the password to the cage is — and no matter what Netflix’s Twitter account claims.
“Unfortunately, I think he’s going to despise her,” Bagley said. “Maybe it’s because she’s successful and blonde? I don’t know, but I think he will.”
“You”‘s second Taylor Swift moment came onscreen, evident in the finale.After Joe sorts out his problems in London and appears to confess everything to Kate, the “anti-hero” plays a wrap-up montage of what happened to the character – and then sees Joe returning to New York City with his past inappropriateness Behavior (aka many With Kate’s funding, the murders) have been cleared up.
Of course, “Anti-Hero” means a lot in Badgley’s world because the song He used his first TikTok, in which he plays two versions of himself. (Perhaps as a nod to Jo’s split personality in season 4.) In late October, the week her album came out, Bagley filmed TikTok — which went viral and garnered support from Swift herself. Approved and said “OMG!!!! 🤩” in the comments “Midnight” came out.
Does he think they used the song for his video, with a title that fit Joe? Badgley isn’t sure, he said, but he thinks so: “I’m almost sure they did it because of that,” he said. “It’s a perfect nod.”
Gamble confirmed Badgley’s guess. “While I was watching the music video, it occurred to me that we should try ‘Anti-Hero’ with a big montage,” she says. “Of course I was immediately reminded of Penn’s first TikTok too – hard to resist that little meta wink, and frankly the fact that Taylor commented on TikTok makes me wish we had a chance to license the song, Even if it’s brand new.“
Netflix hasn’t renewed “You” for season 5, but the show continues to do well for the streamer.its public statistics Global Top 10 list The first half of the show’s fourth season was in the top 10 in 90 countries and remained in Netflix’s global top 10 for three consecutive weeks. After its release on March 9, the second half of the fourth season of “You” immediately rushed to No. 1 in the United States.
The fourth season of “You” — in its original detective framework — differs in tone from the first three seasons. But Badgley said he feels good about the ending. “They always manage to stick to the landing,” he said. “The three-axis movement of each season finale is very difficult.”
Gamble is hopeful of finishing Joe Goldberg’s story during the back-to-school period. “We would love to return to New York,” she said.
