Noida: The couple’s leisure trip from Greater Noida turned into a husband who was detained at Abu Dhabi airport on October 11 after his face was matched with a ‘wanted person’ in facial recognition software Oops. The couple will board a connecting flight from Abu Dhabi to Switzerland when the incident occurred. The man’s wife was forced to return to India the next day and has been grieving ever since, fearing her husband was stranded in a foreign land.
The 45-year-old man, Praveen Kumar, is a resident of Habibpur village in Greater Noida and is a contractor for a cement company. “The company offered the couple a tour of Switzerland organised by a travel agency. They couldn’t find a direct flight to Switzerland and boarded a flight from Delhi to Abu Dhabi, after which they were supposed to fly to their destination … they left on October 11 for a week-long trip,” said Atul Sharma, a relative of Kumar.
According to the man’s wife Usha, they were stopped by immigration authorities at Abu Dhabi airport. “They took our passports and visas. We thought it was routine, but then we were taken to a separate room by airport staff. They told my husband he would be detained because his face was with Abu Dhabi than the faces of criminals wanted by the police,” she said.
“Then I was taken away from my husband and after another hour of waiting I was told that I would be deported back to Delhi. When I asked them about my husband, the officers told me they needed to investigate him so he did not Will come with me. I feel so helpless because I can’t even contact or talk to my husband and have to go back to Delhi,” Usha said.
“Usha called the family and we have been posting to inform the authorities of this misidentified case and help us. We were unable to speak to Kumar,” Sharma said.
On Thursday, the family went to the District Sheriff’s Office for help. DM Suhas LY informed that he had written to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the Uttar Pradesh government’s Home Ministry to investigate the matter.
“I also asked the local police in Greater Noida to conduct a background check on Kumar,” Suhas said.
“My husband has never been to Abu Dhabi or any other Gulf country. This is a clear case of misidentification and as a result our whole family has been harassed. I don’t know how my husband was held by the authorities or he What is it like in a foreign country,” said Usha, 40.
Their families have also been tweeting to Foreign Minister S Jaishankar and other senior officials in the ministry for assistance.
“It was supposed to be a short trip and it turned out to be a nightmare for us. We hope to hear some good news soon,” Sharma said.
