Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II on September 8, 2022, many members of the video game and entertainment industry took to social media to pay tribute to the late monarch.
Rockstar Games, the developer of Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption, rooted in the Scottish cities of Edinburgh and Dundee, tweeted its condolences (below). “Rest in peace, Queen Elizabeth II,” it said. “A global leader whose grace and influence span so many generations.”
Other UK developers have also expressed their sympathy, with Indie Developer Team17 says “Sad to hear of the passing of Queen Elizabeth II”, and Sumo Group CEO Carl Carvers comments He and his team “mourned the nation”.

Cambridge-based Frontier Developments – creators of Elite Dangerous – tweeted a lengthy statement of condolences Too. “We are saddened to learn of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at the border and join the rest of the UK and the Commonwealth in mourning the loss of our head of state,” it said, with a similar message being Shared by UK gaming trade body Ukie.
This sentiment also extends to the entertainment industry, big names including Disney and 20th Century Fox Both expressed their condolences on social media. Paddington’s official Twitter account – in reference to the iconic British bear that was featured at the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee earlier this year – also posted (below): “Thank you ma’am for everything”.

several actors, including Reese Witherspoon and Jason Isaacs Post condolences on their social media accounts. Helen Mirren, arguably one of the most iconic British actresses of all time, is the one who actually played Queen Elizabeth II in 2006’s The Queen. shared a heartfelt statement“I’m proud to be an Elizabethan. We mourn a woman who, with or without a crown, was the epitome of aristocracy.”
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson also posted a touching video to his Twitter (below) expressing his love for the British royal family and sharing a personal story of his father’s death two years ago.
Key members of the tech industry also paid their respects, with Google turning its logo black in tribute to Queen Elizabeth’s passing.

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates tweeted He felt “honoured to meet Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth” and “deeply saddened to hear of her passing”, and Apple CEO Tim Cook also issued a statement: “There is nothing nobler than devotion to service to others. We stand with the people of Britain and the Commonwealth in honour of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s life and devotion to duty. Rest in peace.”
