An Ecuadorian official said that after 24 people were killed and 42 injured in one of the deadliest riots, the prison restored order.

According to Ecuador’s National Prison Service (SNAI), at least 24 prisoners were killed in a battle between prisoners armed with guns and grenades in a prison in Guayaquil, adding that at least 42 people were involved in the deadly riot Injured.

Guayas Governor Pablo Arosemena said at a press conference outside the Marina Prison on Tuesday that order has been restored. “The existence of the state and the law must be felt,” he said.

General Fausto Buenano, the commander of the regional police, said that the death toll included prisoners killed by grenade bombs and deaths.

President Guillermo Lasso forwarded the announcement from the Bureau of Prisons, stating that “order has been restored to Binhai Prison after the incident on Tuesday.”

Officials said the violence involved gunshots, knives and explosions and was caused by a dispute between Los Lobos and Los Choneiros prison gang.

Television footage showed that in the presence of heavy smoke and explosions of guns and explosives, prisoners opened fire from the prison windows.

Ecuador’s prison system has become a battleground between prisoners associated with Mexican drug gangs (mainly new-generation cartels in Sinaloa and Jalisco).

Guayaquil is the main port city of Ecuador and the main hub for cocaine delivery from South America to the northern regions, especially the United States.

Last week, the police confiscated two pistols, a revolver, about 500 rounds of ammunition, a grenade, several knives, two explosives and homemade explosives in a prison in Guayaquil.

Prison authorities said that two weeks ago, Guayaquil’s No. 4 prison was attacked by drones as part of the “inter-cartel war”. There were no casualties in the attack.

The prison system in Ecuador has approximately 60 facilities designed for 29,000 inmates, but is overwhelmed by overcrowding and shortages.

The country’s human rights monitor stated that 103 people were killed in prisons in 2020.

Twenty-seven prisoners were killed in prison riots in two prisons in July, which forced the government to declare a state of emergency.
