On Friday night, Tempe officials confirmed that enough verified signatures had been collected.
Coyotes spokesman Rich Narim said the referendum is already eligible for voting, but it will be up to the Tempe City Council to formally include all three on the May 16 ballot. The committee is expected to hold a hearing on Jan. 12 to vote on whether to send the proposal to voters.
The project will create a 16,000-seat arena, hotel, condominiums, restaurants and shops at the corner of Rio Salado Parkway and Priest Drive. The city of Tempe provided eight years of tax breaks for the project. Meanwhile, NHL Commissioner Gary Bateman said in late November that the project would be funded entirely with private money, so taxpayers wouldn’t pick up the buck. Coyotes President and CEO Xavier Gutierrez said the entertainment district will bring thousands of jobs to the area, but others are concerned about parking and traffic.
