Gemma Brown welcomed the UAE Triathlon Federation’s federation as a “huge incentive” to give expats the opportunity to compete internationally under the country’s flag.

The former Wales hockey international became the champion of the Women’s Super Sprint in the opening match of the inaugural Emirates Triathlon League on Hudayriat Island in Abu Dhabi on Saturday.

The league consists of eight competitions across different emirates, with the top five men’s and women’s open divisions earning ranking points, and the highest-ranked triathlete being eligible to represent the UAE.

“For expat triathletes like us, this is a great motivational and unique opportunity to represent the UAE,” Brown, a teacher at Repton School in Abu Dhabi, told Reuters National.

“I have been competing in triathlon since moving to Abu Dhabi in 2017. I used to play international hockey in the UK. Moved here for my teaching career.

“I tried triathlons and fell in love. I train four times a week and I’ll be back after my injury. Excited to win today and looking forward to a lot of competitions in the league.”

Ajman will host its second match on Sunday, followed by Dubai – Al Mamzar (Oct 23), Fujairah (Nov 12), Sharjah (Nov 13), Ghantoot (Nov 20) , Ras Al Khaimah (January 15) and the final match in Dubai – Al Mamzar, March 12.

Mohammed Aifan competed in the men’s sprint, while Fabien Rencuret and Chris Sellar won the Ironman Olympics and the Ironman Sprint respectively.

The league’s inaugural game attracted more than 100 athletes, another participant was teacher Samir Youssef from New Zealand and his four sons – Oliver (13), Lachlan (11), Jordan ( 9) and Connor (6).

“On behalf of the Abu Dhabi Sports Academy, along with many others competing today, we are delighted to be part of this historic moment,” said Yusuf, 46, who participated in the Masters.

“I have lived here for 15 years and all but my eldest son were born in Abu Dhabi. They are all passionate about athletics and this triathlon league provides them with a solid foundation to pursue in the sport platform.”
