Georgetown art exhibit features Emirati women

An exhibition of contemporary art featuring work by women in the United Arab Emirates will be held at Fathom Gallery in George Town from September 23 to October 14.

The show is called When coffee grounds settle: Stories of women in the UAE, features a diverse group of female artists from across the UAE, spanning nationalities, generations and artistic styles. Their work explores how indoor social spaces, such as living rooms, can foster community building for women. They also reflect the experiences and circumstances that shaped the artist as a woman. The exhibition is organised by the UAE Embassy in Washington in collaboration with the Dirwaza Curatorial Lab, a creative incubator based in Abu Dhabi.

When coffee grounds settle: Stories of women in the UAE Opens Friday, September 23 at 11:00am, coinciding with the return of the Georgetown Arts All-nighter. The exhibit will remain open to visitors until September 23rd at 10:00 pm as part of an arts all-nighter and events with participating local businesses. All are welcome to visit the gallery and enjoy traditional Emirati coffee and dates. There will be free coloring books for children.

As part of the grand opening of the exhibition, Georgetown Compass Coffee, provided by the UAE Embassy, ​​will also be offering free coffee drinks at Art All Night until 9pm.

After the arts all night, the gallery is open daily from 11:00am to 6:00pm until October 14th (except October 12th and 13th) at Fathom Gallery in Georgetown. Admission is free.

Uniquely located at the crossroads of East and West, the UAE has become a global arts hub in recent years. It boasts world-class museums such as the Louvre Abu Dhabi, unique gallery and performance spaces on the famous Alserkal Avenue, and leading regional festivals such as Dubai Arts Festival. Women are at the forefront of the UAE’s burgeoning cultural scene, leading most of the country’s arts institutions.

From artists and scientists to poets and entrepreneurs, Emirati women are forging new paths and leading the UAE forward. The exhibition aims to recognise and honour women who have contributed significantly to the development and advancement of the UAE’s vibrant and diverse creative landscape.
