St. George (CMC):
Grenada’s ambassador to CARICOM, Ali Gil, has confirmed his resignation.
Gill also said he had resigned as chairman of the spice company on Wednesday.
“I voluntarily offered my resignation to the relevant government minister,” said Gill, who was appointed to the post of the former New National government that lost the June 23 general election.
Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell had called for all government-appointed state board members to submit their resignations, but as the annual carnival celebrations are about six weeks away, Gill, an attorney, remains chairman of Spicemas Corporation.
The Spicemas Corporation was established by the former National Democratic Congress when Senator Gill was Secretary of Culture and Information.
As the CARICOM Ambassador of Grenada, he is a member of the CARICOM Ambassadors Committee, whose role is to facilitate the implementation of the community’s strategic plan. Among other functions, the Committee provides strategic advice, advice and support to the Council of Community Ministers in carrying out its functions to advance the integration process in accordance with Article 13 of the amended Treaty.
“I have served with honour and integrity in both positions, but I thought it was the right thing to do to quit, so I gave notice to ministers,” said Gill, who has yet to resign as chairman of Grenada’s National Compensation Commission.
He said he did not believe anyone of African descent should give up the fight for reparations.
“But if I am asked to resign from this committee, I will comply. However, it will not be the end of the cause because I think it is something very important,” he said.
