Young people need to learn more technical skills and use new tools to create their own content and disseminate information on various digital platforms
Young people need to be prepared and fully equipped with new relevant media and technology skills as they are the ones shaping the future, says one of the UAE’s top media professionals.
Speaking at the Global Media Conference in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday, Mona Al Marri, Director General of the Dubai Government Media Office (GDMO), said the world is changing rapidly and young people need the right Skill sets thrive.
“We need to invest more in young people. Young people in the Arab region need to develop broader media skills and technologies in order to assess and apply knowledge in ways that meet the new needs of the media industry,” she said.
“The media is transforming rapidly and young people need to focus on the skills they will need in the future to develop thoughtful, productive and engaged citizens.”
Al Marri pointed out that young people need to learn more technical skills and use new gadgets to create their own content and disseminate information on various digital platforms.
“It is critical for young people to learn new skills in how to communicate quickly, accurately and ethically on social media,” she said.
“Digital analytics is very important for the future. Knowing where your content is going, who you are targeting, and posting the right content on the right social media platform at the right time.”
According to Al Marri, the UAE has taken major steps to equip the younger generation with the skills needed to meet future challenges in various fields, thereby creating a strong human capital.
She said the UAE has launched several initiatives and programs to train young people and prepare them for the media industry.
“The UAE offers many educational and training opportunities to support cultural professionals and youth to gain more experience, skills and knowledge in the media field,” Al Marri added, adding that there is a need to provide youth in the region with opportunities to work in the media .
She also suggested that media organizations invest more in new technologies to promote their digital platforms to reach more young people.
“Media companies need to embrace change. Young people are now spending more time on social media platforms than TV or other media platforms, and that’s where they consume most of their content and information,” Al Marri said.
Previously, media companies controlled information, the official noted. But at the moment, social media platforms have taken over, and that needs to change.

In another panel discussion titled “Highlighting new and future investment opportunities in global media”, Hon Monica Mutsvangwa, Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services of Zimbabwe, said the government and media organizations need to move from conversational to digital to engage younger generations.
“We need to invest in artificial intelligence, social media and other digital platforms. But we also have to look at the challenges involved, such as the spread of fake news, inaccurate information and inappropriate content, to protect the younger generation,” she said.
Ramzan bin Abdullah Al Nuaimi, Minister of Information Affairs (Bahrain), said that human capital is very important and critical for the future. “Younger generations need to be well-skilled and new technologies like the Metaverse because they have more influence over the future and the government needs to pay more attention to that,” he said.
