first, Google CEO Sunder Pichai visited the Indian embassy in the US capital and discussed various aspects of the tech company’s activities in the country with India’s ambassador to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, especially its aggressive push towards digitalisation.
“Thank you” Ambassador Sanhu for the great conversation, Pichai tweeted after visiting the Indian embassy in downtown Washington, D.C., late last week. This is the first visit by a top Indian-American tech CEO to the embassy here.
“It’s great to have the opportunity to discuss Google’s commitment to India and look forward to our continued support of India’s digital future,” said Pichai, who was named one of 17 Padma Bhushan recipients in January this year.
“Technology that changes; ideas that make it happen!” Sandhu tweeted. He said it was “pleased to host” Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai at the embassy.
“Ideas were exchanged on expanding the India-US business, knowledge and technology partnership with Google,” the Indian envoy said.
Google under Pichai has invested heavily in India and has significantly expanded its footprint in a wide range of areas, including training the younger generation.
It has announced an investment of about $10 billion in digitization in India under Google. It also has partnerships with Reliance’s Jeo and Bharti Airtel. In addition, it collaborates with India on workforce development and skills development. They are working with the government on the Digital India Initiative and the National Digital Literacy Mission.
During the meeting with the Indian ambassador, Pichai was very appreciative of the initiatives taken by India and highlighted how Google views India in a very positive frame. The ambassador highlighted knowledge and education partnerships.
During the conversation, the Google CEO is also believed to have discussed various ways of working with India, especially in the field of education. They also discussed Google’s digitization efforts in India, including digital payments and infrastructure digitization.
The Indian ambassador noted that Google is an important partner in India’s digital transformation, which is a priority for the government.
Notably, Google and its parent company Alphabet have Coronavirus disease last year’s crisis. They have invested heavily in supporting India and they are part of a global task force set up by the US CEO on this.
The Indian government has stepped up its engagement with the U.S. chief executive.Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal Earlier this month, he met with Silicon Valley CEOs during a trip to California.
Sandhu himself met several CEOs on a recent trip. He also visited Silicon Valley University, considered a hub for such innovation.
They also have some venture capitalists and entrepreneurs in San Francisco as part of India’s latest push to engage with the US tech industry.
