Govt bans import of apples at Rs 50/kg; Iran, UAE may be hit

Government sources said China would also be affected, although official data showed imports from across the border were negligible.this General Administration of Foreign Trade Announced its decision to move apples priced up to Rs 50 per kg (including cost, insurance and shipping) from the “free” category to the “prohibited” category, except for Bhutan.
The source said the ban was made on the advice of the Ministry of Agriculture. The revision of the trade policy comes during the off-season for apples.
At the high end, Washington apples and Turkish apples have flooded the market in recent years. In the last fiscal year, apple imports were worth nearly $300 million, down about 24 percent from the previous year.
Official breakdown data for April-February shows that Turkey accounted for the largest share of imports ($72 million), followed by Chile ($38.6 million), Italy ($34 million) and Iran ($26 million). US apple imports fell 76% to $5 million.
