Nigerian drug enforcement agency says 63-year-old man hid marijuana in black soap
The Nigerian National Drug Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) announced on Sunday that a Nigerian grandfather has been arrested for trying to smuggle drugs into his daughter in Dubai.
The 63-year-old was detained at the Murtala Muhammad International Airport (MMIA) in Ikeja Lagos, Nigeria.
NDLEA spokesman Femi Babafemi said the suspect admitted to hiding cannabis in a black bar of local soap as part of a shipment sent to his daughter, who lives in Dubai.
“He also admitted that this was his second attempt to send this illegal substance to his daughter,” Babafemi said.
A Nigerian freight forwarder has been separately arrested for attempting to export 250 grams of tramadol and cannabis to Dubai.
zero tolerance policy
The UAE has a zero-tolerance policy on drug trafficking.
In March, Dubai Police cracked down on 100 dealers for peddling via WhatsApp. In May 2022, Dubai Police achieved another major success in the fight against drug trafficking when Operation Stinger, code-named “Sugarcane”, in partnership with French, Spanish and Colombian law enforcement agencies, took down a global drug cartel.
The operation led to the arrest of 18 criminals and the seizure of 22 tons of cocaine-contaminated sugar smuggled from Colombia through the French port of Le Havre. Among those arrested was the MD, whom Lt. Gen. Abdullah Khalifa al-Mari, commander-in-chief of Dubai Police, described as a key member of the gang.
Last year, Abu Dhabi police seized drugs with an estimated street value of Dh1.2 billion as part of a major crackdown on drug trafficking.
Meanwhile, the Sharjah Police’s anti-narcotics unit has seized Dh135 million worth of drugs between 2021 and May 2022. The drugs included 822kg of methamphetamine, 94kg of cannabis and 251kg of heroin.
